How to Add a Poll to Your WordPress Blog without a Plugin

September 17, 2010 at 6:19 pm | Blog | No comment

I tried to add a poll to my blog. There are pretty many plugins for wordpress. However, many of them are not so easy to use, and not straight forward to me. Some are easy to use, but my web host does not allow to use for security purpose.

Finally, I ran into polldaddy, which provides professional surveys and polls online. Easy to use and flexible to customize.

1. Sign up for a free account.
polldaddy provides three kinds of account: free, pro and corporate.

If you don’t have very high demands on the polls and surveys, the free account is enough.

I was trained to use brush to write and paint when i was a child. but at that time I was too young to understand the beauty lies in the Chinese brush paintings and writings. Recently, when i am getting closer and closer to web design, i realize that it should be interesting and unique to put Chinese paintings into web design. l gathered a collection of impressive traditional Chinese brush paintings to provide you with some inspiration, as well as some knowledge on the Chinese culture.

Chinese Opera

Chinese opera is a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China. The actors and actresses wear very beautiful makeups. Kunqu is one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera. And it is the most elegant and beautiful form of Chinese opera in my opinion. The following is a painting on a Kunqu actress.

Removing the Default Tooltip in a WordPress Menu

September 9, 2010 at 6:56 pm | Blog | No comment

My friend is working on a wordpress theme these days, and he found that there was an annoying tooltip in the menu, which will cover the sub menu. so he asked me how to remove the redundant tooltip in the wp_list_pages generated menu bar. see the above image.

I think others should also have this problem. So, we decide to share this tip with all.

his code is:

1
$page_list =wp_list_pages('exclude=1,2&title_li=&sort_column=menu_order');

if looked into the generated html code, it is something like this:

The default tooltip is actually the “title” attribute of the hype link. So to remove it, we need to remove the title attribute.

we can use preg_replace to replace the “title” with and empty string.

A little modification to his code to:

1
2
3
$page_list =wp_list_pages('exclude=1,2&title_li=&sort_column=menu_order&echo=0');
$page_list = preg_replace('/title=\"(.*?)\"/','',$page_list);
echo $page_list;

as we have to manipulate the html snippet before print it out, we use “echo=0″ to turn off the default print out function, we will manually call “echo” to print it out.
